The STQ Workforce Coordination Project
A joint initiative of Service Trades Queensland and Construction Skills Queensland has resulted in the STQ Workforce Coordination Project.
The project is an exciting approach to the service trades sectors of plumbing, fire protection and air conditioning and covers 4 main areas…
Apprentice Support
A mentor who can be contacted for support and assistance when confronted with concerns or issues which prevent obstacles to effective participation in the apprenticeship journey.
Ideally the problem will be addressed promptly and worked through in partnership with all of those concerned to bring about an effective and satisfactory resolution.
Examples of support includes: learning support, provision of career information, assistance with substance abuse, gambling, financial, relationship or similar issues.
Career Training Plans
The development of individual career training pathway plans for apprentices who are completing their final year. It is the aim of these plans to consider an apprentice’s future goals within the industry; an example may be to become a business owner.
The plans are to consider desirable timeframes as well as the specific training qualifications required in order to meet outlined objectives. They are also to consider industry needs and any identified skills gaps both within the apprenticeship as well as industry more broadly.
The plans are to be developed using industry association career pathway guides as a starting point. Following this step, engagement is to occur with industry representatives, employers, trainers and most importantly the apprentices themselves.
Eprofiling
The Service Trades College has an Eprofiling program that is currently implemented. The goal of this program is for apprenticeship reporting to be undertaken by electronic rather than hardcopy form.
Engagement with apprentices and their employer/responsible person is occurring. This engagement will establish any barriers to successful implementation and design solutions to overcome any identified barriers.
Industry Leaders/Role Models
We are identifying the service trades industry leaders and role models of the future. This identification is occurring in consultation with key stakeholders so that suitable criteria are used.
We will then undertake the process of selecting and engaging future leaders on matters such as industry culture, training initiatives, industry structure and relevant legislation/regulation changes or future direction. It is also being considered how best to use these leaders to attract new apprentices to the service trades within the Queensland construction industry.
The program also:
- Coordinates and engages with industry players
- Reviews future skills needs
- Promotes diversity
- Identifies best practice.
